Why Growers Choose Buddy Tape

Trusted by Nurseries Worldwide

Since the early 1990s, Buddy Tape has become the preferred grafting tape for nurseries, propagators and research organisations in more than 60 countries.

Its unique combination of elasticity, breathability and moisture protection creates an ideal environment for successful graft union formation, while reducing labour and improving consistency across large-scale propagation.

Unlike conventional grafting tapes, Buddy Tape naturally photodegrades after exposure to sunlight, eliminating the need for manual removal once the graft has healed.

Bench Grafting

Fast, reliable graft wrapping for high-volume nursery production

Buddy Tape is widely used for bench grafting of fruit trees, grapevines and ornamentals. Its exceptional elasticity holds the graft firmly in place, while the waterproof yet breathable film creates ideal conditions for callus formation and successful healing. Because the tape photodegrades naturally, there is no need to remove it after graft establishment.

Chip Budding

Fast application with excellent bud protection

Buddy Tape stretches tightly around the bud without requiring knots or additional ties. The breathable film protects against dehydration while allowing the bud to develop naturally. As new growth emerges, the tape weakens and splits, eliminating the labour required to remove conventional budding tapes.

Micro Grafting

Gentle protection for delicate propagation work.

Used by specialist propagators worldwide, Buddy Tape stretches as the small plant rapidly expands, providing ongoing support without cutting into the growing plant. Additionally, excellent moisture retention is achieved while allowing gas exchange around extremely delicate grafts, maintaining an ideal environment during the critical healing period.

Applications

Trusted by nurseries for the propagation of fruit trees, grapevines, citrus, almonds, ornamentals and many other grafted crops.

International Horticultural Congress 2026 Kyoto logo accompanying Buddy Tape research presentation on nursery grafting techniques.

Buddy Tape Research to Be Presented at the International Horticultural Congress

Japan Concept Managing Director Jonathan Caisley will speak at the International Horticultural Congress in Kyoto on 25 August, as part of Aglis’ presentation on recent Buddy Tape research.

The presentation will focus on trial work carried out over the last three years in Italy and France, examining how Buddy Tape can support alternative grafting techniques to conventional omega grafting. Propagation losses are often reported at around 30–50%, making improvements in grafting success increasingly important.

As consumers, supermarkets and regulators place greater pressure on agriculture to reduce waste, improving propagation efficiency becomes a significant opportunity to protect valuable resources. The conference presentation will explain how Buddy Tape may contribute to higher grafting success rates and reduced losses in professional nursery production.

Japan Concept presented Buddy Tape and EF Polymer at Macfrut 2026, demonstrating how two innovative Japanese technologies help nurseries reduce waste, improve efficiency and support sustainable horticulture.

Japan Concept Showcases Sustainable Innovation at Macfrut 2026

At Macfrut 2026 in Rimini, Japan Concept presented Buddy Tape alongside its newest product for European agriculture, EF Polymer, highlighting a shared commitment to reducing waste and improving sustainability in commercial horticulture.

Buddy Tape has helped nurseries reduce labour and plastic waste for more than 30 years through its naturally photodegradable grafting film. EF Polymer complements that approach by improving water and nutrient efficiency using a biodegradable hydrogel made from natural biomass.

Carlo Salone, Director of Japan Concept Srl, commented:

"Although they solve very different challenges, Buddy Tape and EF Polymer share the same philosophy—helping growers use valuable resources more efficiently while leaving no persistent residues behind. We're proud to represent two innovative Japanese technologies that support more sustainable horticulture."
